Daddy Yankee “Prestige Tour 2011” Live in Toronto!

19 Aug

“DADDY YANKEE! DADDY YANKEE!” was all that could be heard as a stadium full of fans chanted minutes before the artist, Daddy Yankee, took the stage on July 23rd, 2011 at the Powerade Centre. It was the first time that Daddy Yankee visited Canada and he was very excited to be here to perform for his Toronto fans. The night before, July 22nd, I attended the press conference that was held for Toronto media to get a closer look and idea of what the artist was about; particularly when it came to his upcoming album, his tour and other projects that the artist is working on. For more details on the press conference click here for my previous post on the event.

Crown Loyalty Entertainment, Mynt Productions and Icaro Booking Services worked together to bring us THE concert of the summer; particularly for the Latin American community of Toronto and the GTA. Daddy Yankee fans have waited with patience for years for this production to finally come to reality in Toronto and it was a pleasure having the artist here for the one night Prestige Tour 2011 stop. Fito Blanko and El Cata opened for Daddy Yankee and were truly successful in getting the crowd pumped up and excited for main performance. Toronto based artist, Fito Blanko, performed some of his hit songs such as his way back hit “Take Her Home”. El Cata followed Fito with his performance of “Loca” and the two artists then finalized the opening of the show with a duo performance of “VIP”.  Both Fito Blanko and El Cata had the audience on their feet and dancing in preparation of DY to hit the stage; the audience could NOT wait! Below are pictures of Fito Blanko and El Cata during their performances:

Daddy Yankee hit the stage along with his male dancers, dressed up in robotic like outfits, and opened his show by performing one of his greatest hits “Descontrol”. The crowd went INSANE! There was nothing that could be done to calm the excitement that the crowd experience when DY hit the stage; immediately everyone was dancing, singing and shouting at the highly anticipated performer. Daddy Yankee continued the show by performing many more of his top hits that have brought him and have kept him at the rise of his career; and he even free styled about Toronto at one point during the show. The audience, which ranged from approximately 5 years old to people in the 50s, was an accurate reflection of the audience that Daddy Yankee’s music reaches and impacts. At one point during the show, a little boy got up on stage and break danced to one of the songs; which entertained not only the crowd by DY as well since he paused during the songs for he could not help but smirk at the show that the little boy was putting on for everyone. Who knows? We may have experienced the little future star’s first time on stage.

Daddy Yankee’s performance was a true success and everything the crowd had expected in the artist’s first visit to Toronto. Everyone had an amazing time at the show; the crowd sang and danced non stop to DY’s top hits from the beginning of his career to his most popular songs of today. Scroll down below for more shots of the artist that I took throughout the show. For those who attended the concert, I am sure you have the perfect idea of how great the production turned out to be; and for those that did not hopefully you caught Daddy Yankee’s Calgary show on August 20th to get an idea on what you missed out on. I am confident Daddy Yankee will return to Toronto on his next tour date and I definitely cannot wait to see him live in concert once again.

Christie

Daddy Yankee “Prestige Tour 2011” Press Conference

19 Aug

On July 22nd, 2011, a press conference was held in Toronto as part of Daddy Yankee’s Prestige Tour 2011. Media from all over Toronto, from TLNTV to What’s Good Toronto, attended the press conference to get an up close and personal insight as to the successful singer’s tour among other projects that he is currently working on. Daddy Yankee, a world recognized Puerto Rican reggaeton artist, was in Toronto for the first time in his career for a long awaited performance at the Powerade Centre on July 23rd, 2011.

Toronto based artist and president of Crown Entertainment, Fito Blanko, was the host for the evening. Crown Loyalty Entertainment partnered with Mynt Entertainment in order to produce the much anticipated event; as well as with Icaro which is Daddy Yankee’s official booking agency. It is amazing to finally have Daddy Yankee in Toronto and particularly be a part of all the events surrounding his visit.

As professional as all the media representatives were in attendance it was hard to hide the excitement that everyone felt to get a closer look at Daddy Yankee. He entered the room with a bright smile and right away was ready to take on all of our questions; both in english and in spanish. DY spoke of the fuel that he obtains from being true to himself, as well as the energy that the fans and family bring him to perform every day to its fullest. DY also discussed the critical need for artists to recognize their talents and use them to the fullest; which he stated as key features of forming a great artist. Previous work was discussed such as his movie, Talento De Barrio, which was the highest grossing film in Puerto Rico; and new projects were also brought up like an upcoming album which will feature many collaborations with various artists. Charity projects by the artist were also talked about, such as Corazon Guerrero, which is his personal charity that collects funds to aid youth with post secondary scholarships. From noticing that youth were an important aspects of Daddy Yankee’s views, I asked him what his message was for Latin American youth in North America were; since Latino youth have one of the highest drop out rates and are portrayed as causing trouble within their communities. Daddy Yankee responded that it was important for youth to keep their family close, stay in school and keep the belief in God close to you. He then went on to discuss the importance of an education beyond high school for people to be truly successful in life; this showed the substance beyond the artist and the  care that he has in his audiences and fans. In relation to the messages that the audiences receive from the artist, a media professional asked  about the music ratings and explicit lyrics that are linked to Daddy Yankee’s music; which he replied by stating the similarities between music and movies in the way that some are rated G, PG, R and so on. Another question that I asked the artist in relation to his music was related to the reasons behind him being so true to his spanish roots when it came to the language of his music; particularly with all the pressures that Latin American artists have to produce english albums when trying to break into the North American markets. He responded that by stating that he wanted to conquer with his own roots and performing in spanish also gives him a chance to perform with different types of cultures and artists from different backgrounds since music is universal. Last but not least, a question that many people have debated and discussed was brought up; is reggaeton dead? Daddy Yankee responded this by stating that reggaeton has changed and evolved in a snowball kind of effect; yet no matter what it will keep it’s roots as 100% musica de la calle (musica of the streets).

Daddy Yankee was very welcoming to everyone’s questions, answered all of them the best way that he could and explained himself thoroughly. It was truly a pleasure to interact with the artist and hear his perspective on many aspects of his industry and life. Fito Blanko was also great in that he was out in the lobby of the press conference room socializing with everyone which truly showed how down to earth these two artists are. I had a chance to chat with Fito Blanko, we are in the image above, who was super pumped for the event; particularly to be performing at the concert with El Cata. I am personally very grateful that Fito Blanko and Crown Entertainment made this huge event happen since it was long overdue!
