Jennifer Lopez Pays Tribute to Celia Cruz at AMAs 2013

25 Nov

The most talked about performance at last night’s American Music Awards, without a doubt, belongs to Jennifer Lopez!

Her tribute to the “Reina de la Salsa”, Celia Cruz, had everyone in the crowd doing more than just a two-step. From a Latina’s perspective, the most beautiful thing about this performance was that it blended what our parents and grandparents grew up listening to and what I have grown up to. It blended decades of Latin music and, in particular, represented the integration of Latin and North American culture. If you grew up in a Latin household, Celia Cruz is no foreign name! Of course, in today’s media, neither is Jennifer Lopez!

See the full length performance below:

Jennifer Lopez is a top name when it comes to entertaining the audience, bringing us top notch performances and providing a brilliant spectacle. She has amazed us for years; from her early days dancing “In Living Color”, to her acting debut in Selena, to the 2013 AMAs. From today’s media frenzy, there is no doubt there is much more to come from her!

Celia Cruz is the top female in Latin music. Her legacy is one that cannot be overcome! As much as I liked Jennifer’s performance, I would have liked to see more Latina entertainers taking part in this performance. For example, Olga Tañon and/or Gloria Estefan would have blown the roof off the AMAs. Their voices would have better reflected the talent that Celia Cruz brought to the music industry. Having them on stage together would truly be the epitome of Latina empowerment in the music industry. Who knows, maybe the Latin Grammys have that up their sleeve for an upcoming year. We can only hope!

Overall, I’m super delighted that the Latin American culture was highlighted in such a beautiful way. I particularly love how welcome it was, not only by everyone at the venue, but by the audiences at home and the media. I’m proud that our culture has come such a long way in the North American media; from the past days of Celia Cruz to the current days of Jennifer Lopez.

Daddy Yankee “Prestige Tour 2011” Live in Toronto!

19 Aug

“DADDY YANKEE! DADDY YANKEE!” was all that could be heard as a stadium full of fans chanted minutes before the artist, Daddy Yankee, took the stage on July 23rd, 2011 at the Powerade Centre. It was the first time that Daddy Yankee visited Canada and he was very excited to be here to perform for his Toronto fans. The night before, July 22nd, I attended the press conference that was held for Toronto media to get a closer look and idea of what the artist was about; particularly when it came to his upcoming album, his tour and other projects that the artist is working on. For more details on the press conference click here for my previous post on the event.

Crown Loyalty Entertainment, Mynt Productions and Icaro Booking Services worked together to bring us THE concert of the summer; particularly for the Latin American community of Toronto and the GTA. Daddy Yankee fans have waited with patience for years for this production to finally come to reality in Toronto and it was a pleasure having the artist here for the one night Prestige Tour 2011 stop. Fito Blanko and El Cata opened for Daddy Yankee and were truly successful in getting the crowd pumped up and excited for main performance. Toronto based artist, Fito Blanko, performed some of his hit songs such as his way back hit “Take Her Home”. El Cata followed Fito with his performance of “Loca” and the two artists then finalized the opening of the show with a duo performance of “VIP”.  Both Fito Blanko and El Cata had the audience on their feet and dancing in preparation of DY to hit the stage; the audience could NOT wait! Below are pictures of Fito Blanko and El Cata during their performances:

Daddy Yankee hit the stage along with his male dancers, dressed up in robotic like outfits, and opened his show by performing one of his greatest hits “Descontrol”. The crowd went INSANE! There was nothing that could be done to calm the excitement that the crowd experience when DY hit the stage; immediately everyone was dancing, singing and shouting at the highly anticipated performer. Daddy Yankee continued the show by performing many more of his top hits that have brought him and have kept him at the rise of his career; and he even free styled about Toronto at one point during the show. The audience, which ranged from approximately 5 years old to people in the 50s, was an accurate reflection of the audience that Daddy Yankee’s music reaches and impacts. At one point during the show, a little boy got up on stage and break danced to one of the songs; which entertained not only the crowd by DY as well since he paused during the songs for he could not help but smirk at the show that the little boy was putting on for everyone. Who knows? We may have experienced the little future star’s first time on stage.

Daddy Yankee’s performance was a true success and everything the crowd had expected in the artist’s first visit to Toronto. Everyone had an amazing time at the show; the crowd sang and danced non stop to DY’s top hits from the beginning of his career to his most popular songs of today. Scroll down below for more shots of the artist that I took throughout the show. For those who attended the concert, I am sure you have the perfect idea of how great the production turned out to be; and for those that did not hopefully you caught Daddy Yankee’s Calgary show on August 20th to get an idea on what you missed out on. I am confident Daddy Yankee will return to Toronto on his next tour date and I definitely cannot wait to see him live in concert once again.

Christie

Daddy Yankee “Prestige Tour 2011” Press Conference

19 Aug

On July 22nd, 2011, a press conference was held in Toronto as part of Daddy Yankee’s Prestige Tour 2011. Media from all over Toronto, from TLNTV to What’s Good Toronto, attended the press conference to get an up close and personal insight as to the successful singer’s tour among other projects that he is currently working on. Daddy Yankee, a world recognized Puerto Rican reggaeton artist, was in Toronto for the first time in his career for a long awaited performance at the Powerade Centre on July 23rd, 2011.

Toronto based artist and president of Crown Entertainment, Fito Blanko, was the host for the evening. Crown Loyalty Entertainment partnered with Mynt Entertainment in order to produce the much anticipated event; as well as with Icaro which is Daddy Yankee’s official booking agency. It is amazing to finally have Daddy Yankee in Toronto and particularly be a part of all the events surrounding his visit.

As professional as all the media representatives were in attendance it was hard to hide the excitement that everyone felt to get a closer look at Daddy Yankee. He entered the room with a bright smile and right away was ready to take on all of our questions; both in english and in spanish. DY spoke of the fuel that he obtains from being true to himself, as well as the energy that the fans and family bring him to perform every day to its fullest. DY also discussed the critical need for artists to recognize their talents and use them to the fullest; which he stated as key features of forming a great artist. Previous work was discussed such as his movie, Talento De Barrio, which was the highest grossing film in Puerto Rico; and new projects were also brought up like an upcoming album which will feature many collaborations with various artists. Charity projects by the artist were also talked about, such as Corazon Guerrero, which is his personal charity that collects funds to aid youth with post secondary scholarships. From noticing that youth were an important aspects of Daddy Yankee’s views, I asked him what his message was for Latin American youth in North America were; since Latino youth have one of the highest drop out rates and are portrayed as causing trouble within their communities. Daddy Yankee responded that it was important for youth to keep their family close, stay in school and keep the belief in God close to you. He then went on to discuss the importance of an education beyond high school for people to be truly successful in life; this showed the substance beyond the artist and the  care that he has in his audiences and fans. In relation to the messages that the audiences receive from the artist, a media professional asked  about the music ratings and explicit lyrics that are linked to Daddy Yankee’s music; which he replied by stating the similarities between music and movies in the way that some are rated G, PG, R and so on. Another question that I asked the artist in relation to his music was related to the reasons behind him being so true to his spanish roots when it came to the language of his music; particularly with all the pressures that Latin American artists have to produce english albums when trying to break into the North American markets. He responded that by stating that he wanted to conquer with his own roots and performing in spanish also gives him a chance to perform with different types of cultures and artists from different backgrounds since music is universal. Last but not least, a question that many people have debated and discussed was brought up; is reggaeton dead? Daddy Yankee responded this by stating that reggaeton has changed and evolved in a snowball kind of effect; yet no matter what it will keep it’s roots as 100% musica de la calle (musica of the streets).

Daddy Yankee was very welcoming to everyone’s questions, answered all of them the best way that he could and explained himself thoroughly. It was truly a pleasure to interact with the artist and hear his perspective on many aspects of his industry and life. Fito Blanko was also great in that he was out in the lobby of the press conference room socializing with everyone which truly showed how down to earth these two artists are. I had a chance to chat with Fito Blanko, we are in the image above, who was super pumped for the event; particularly to be performing at the concert with El Cata. I am personally very grateful that Fito Blanko and Crown Entertainment made this huge event happen since it was long overdue! For more details on the concert itself check out the following blog post!

LOISAIDAS in Toronto! Mucha Bachata!

11 Mar

Loisaidas, the bachateros from lower east side Manhattan, were in Toronto Friday March 4th, 2011 for their debut show here in Canada. I had the chance of hanging out with the boys for an exclusive interview prior to their show at Las Brisas Nightclub which turned out to be a full house event.

I arrived to the conference room of the hotel they were staying at to have Aquiles open the door with a welcoming smile, and I must admit his good looks definitely struck me but also proved to me what a warm and down to earth gentlemen he truly is. A couple of minutes later, Isaiah joined us in the conference room and right away noticed his shy yet charming presence. As I had mentioned in my previous post on Loisaidas, the boys proved themselves to be so real, not only thru their music but thru the way that they presented themselves. Watch the video below to check out the full interview and judge for yourself!

Following the interview I headed over to Las Brisas Nightclub to check out the show and of course the boys did not disappoint! The crowd was very excited to have them there and welcomed them by singing along to every one of the song lyrics, and even by requesting songs which the boys gladly accepted. Even with technical difficulties of Isaiah’s keyboard the boys definitely put on a show and once they got the keyboard working Isaiah played a beautiful solo which truly showcased his talent. Check out the following video so you can get a glimpse of the performance:

Loisaidas performed their top hits like “Ayer” and “No Me Dejes” and complimented their performance by inviting two ladies on stage with them, one got sang to by Aquiles and the other danced bachata with Isaiah. But of course, I got the icing on the Loisaidas cake when Isaiah walked on stage and warmly smiled at me and Aquiles sang directly to me during their first song. Below are some pictures from their performance:

Loisaidas on stage at Brisas Nightclub

Aquiles on stage at Brisas Nightclub

Isaiah on stage at Brisas Nightclub

Overall, Aquiles and Isaiah were really excited about performing and being in Canada, even with the delays they experienced at the Canadian border and the chaotically short trip.  I am still incredibly surprised to learn that Isaiah is not of Latin American decent yet he has this passion for bachata as music and as art to not only perform it but create it. It is evident that both Isaiah and Aquiles have an insane amount of talent and there is no doubt that the approach they are currently taking towards the industry will bring them a long way. Below is an image of the boys and I following their interview:

Loisaidas and I after the exclusive interview

There is no question that no matter how big the struggles are that the boys face within the industry, as they mentioned in the interview, they should still continue to fight since they have so much talent. Even though it is still fairly early in their careers they have achieved so much and have been recognized in ways that other artists still strive for. The attitudes that Loisaidas has towards the industry will definitely take them a long way, they are true to their roots and constantly remind themselves that ‘it is just music”; yet it is music that they create which touches the hearts of so many bachateros and bachateras. It was a pleasure spending time with Aquiles and Isaiah and I definitely hope they come back for another performance in the near future. Oh and ladies, Isaiah is not being treated too well by us so next time he’s in town let’s be sure to show him our love and attention!

For more information on Loisaidas check out their Facebook Fan Page , their Twitter account and of course www.loisaidas.net.

LOISAIDAS Live in Toronto!

1 Mar

Up and coming bachata group Loisaidas will be performing for the first time in Toronto this Friday, March 4th, 2011 at Las Brisas Nightclub (24 Rivalda Rd. Toronto, Ontario). The anticipated event will be Loisaidas’ debut on a Canadian stage and as proud Latinos, no doubt we want to show our support!

Loisaidas consists of songwriter and vocalist, Aquiles Nuñez, and producer and psyche, Isaiah Parker. The two best friends grew up in the lower east side of Manhattan, which is where the name Loisaidas originates from; since it is the name of an avenue there and also a term used by Latinos to refer to the lower east side of Manhattan. Their debut album, “Ayer”, contains tracks such as “No Me Dejes” which had a 20 week run on the Billboard Latin Tropical Airplay and reached #8; yet one of the highest recognitions is that the track landed the #2 spot on New York’s top tropical latin radio station 97.9, a spot behind Aventura. Other great achievements include being one of the first latin groups to perform at the MET in NYC and performing at the Latin Vibe Concert along with latin music legends like Alejandra Guzman and Daddy Yankee. Below are some videos so you can get a vibe of Loisaidas’ smooth and unique urban sentimiento flavour:

Loisaidas has emerged into the latin music/bachata scene and is already leaving a strong mark, not only thru their recent achievements but thru the impact that they are leaving on latin youth; such mark has been seen as the revolution of the urban bachata genre for youth culture from NY to Miami, and now hopefully Toronto. Aquiles and Isaiah are real and humble artists that are staying true to their roots regardless of their rise to fame. They have high bars to reach which have been set by artists such as Aventura and Prince Royce, who is also signed to their label; yet we have no doubt the boys from lower east Manhattan can not only reach, but set their own bars within the latin music and bachata scene.

Your truly has been granted the opportunity for an exclusive interview prior to the Loisaidas show  with the boys on Friday which we are very excited about! If you have any suggestions as to questions you would like me to ask the boys please don’t hesitate to contact me. Of course, I can’t wait to see you all at the show and please, please, please make sure you arrive early (doors open at 10pm) since it is certain that Brisas will be a full house that night! See you there!

With Love,

Christie
