Marc Jacobs Intern Makes A Memorable Exit

25 Mar

If you follow Marc Jacobs International on Twitter you may have noticed some “out of character” tweets that were sure to have you clicking on the profile for more. On the current intern’s last day, the individual decided to tweet it all out making it one of the most memorable exits I have ever witnessed. What makes this most interesting is that Marc Jacobs is currently in the process of their search for an official Marc Jacobs twitter(er), for the lack of a better word. Below is a print screen of the 4 tweets that the intern posted, and of course we had to get our hands on this before it is taken down in the morning.

These tweets are the perfect example of what you do NOT do when you are interning, particularly for such a powerful and influential brand like Marc Jacobs’. We once again learn the lesson of truly thinking of what we say and how we say it before we let it out of our systems. It is evident that this individual was well aware of their actions and had the full intention of making their thoughts public; yet without a doubt they are going to regret this sooner or later.

Many have commented on how this will affect the brand of Marc Jacobs; yet I personally believe that it does not do any damage to the brand at all but teaches them a lesson to be more cautious with who to hire as an intern. As for the intern, these actions have definitely damaged their career, whether she is not working in that town again or not, since Marc Jacobs is an international brand.

This issue comes down to the level of professionalism one must have at their work place since, whether you love it or hate it, you are a representation of that company and brand and the image you present is that of the brand. So let’s remember to keep certain thoughts to ourselves and hope that this tweeting individual does not ask for a letter of recommendation.

I Wore Purple…Did You?

21 Oct

Yesterday, Oct 20th, there was a movement organized to wear the colour purple to raise awareness and commemorate the GLBT youth that have committed suicide due to bullying and homophobia. This movement spoke very loudly since by simply wearing the colour purple GLBT youth recognized the support that they have by the people within their communities.

The issue of homophobia against GLBT youth has been going on for years, but recently it has really hit our communities since there has been a wave of suicides by gay youth for the bullying and unacceptable that they have to endure within their every day lives.

People Magazine Cover - Oct 2010

People Magazine release an issue with a front cover that remembered the youth and made the situation aware to their readers and other people that simply walk by the magazine stands. I applaud the efforts of People Magazine to bring this issue to the surface and make people see that something has to be done, particularly by putting a face or identity to the stories we heard in the news.

There are many celebrities joining this movement, particularly through the It Gets Better campaign  which consists of many Youtube videos posting hopeful video messages for the youth reminding them that “It Gets Better”. Below are some of the celebrities that have joined the movement:

A video that particularly stood out to us is of Tim Gunn, from Project Runway, who for the first time admitted his experience as a gay youth and his suicide attempt and how glad he is that it was unsuccessful. Watch below:

GLBT youth are not alone, there are many people out there that have gone through what they are going through today and have gone on to lead extremely successful lives. It’s about educating people around us and ensuring thy know that it is ok to have different likes outside of the norms of society, and it is most of all ok to express yourself the best way you see fit. So together, along with organizations and projects like the “Make It Better” project and the “It Gets Better” campaign we will try our best to educate people and prevent teens with such high potentials from taking their own lives as a result of unfortunate circumstances.

New Day, New Year

13 Sep

Today was my official first day as a third year at YorkU. Lucky for me (and I mean this sarcastically) I woke up an hour later than the time I had set my alarm clock for. So off I rushed by slipping on my TNA trackies, a solid black tank top, and a baseball cap; yes! a baseball cap! A baseball cap which I purchased at the airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica on my trip there last October and I got many compliments on today. So my rush and a half while getting dressed wasn’t all that much of a fail after all.

Of course, the brilliant urban planners, or who ever else I should blame for this, decides it would be a good idea to begin major road construction during one of the most congested times of the year; therefore it took my that much longer to get to school.

I finally stumbled into class trying not to call too much attention to myself, since the doors happened to be situated at the front of the class, which is just perfect for people arriving late.

Hopefully the experiences of today don’t reflect on the rest of my year; or as I like to look at it, all the bad stuff is out of the way today so I can go on to have a brilliant year full of success and good grades.

How to Find a Job Using Social Media and N’etiquette 101 – My Experience

3 Aug

On the 29th of July, I went to a workshop that was offered at York University by the Career Centre which was called “How to Find a Job Using Social Media and N’Etiquette 101”. The workshop focused on different social media websites one could use in order for people who are looking for a job to get their name out there beyond a faxed in resume. This workshop also touched upon etiquette over the internet, how to speak to perspective employers and a small tutorial as to how to sign up to LinkedIn and its uses and purposes.

I found the workshop very informative and gave me more of an intro to LinkedIn, which was one of the main purposes to my attendance. Another purpose to my attendance was to obtain more information about the uses of social media in finding a job, particularly since the use of social media is so essential to Public Relations. The lady facilitating the workshop was fairly new to the idea and use to social media, since she had been asked to learn about it particularly for the purpose of teaching this workshop.

My most interesting and intriguing find at this workshop was that most of the people in attendance had this certain level of fear of social media, which mainly had to do with privacy rights and how much of their personal information was going to be displayed over the world wide web. It was as if the internet was a threat to them, rather than an important tool in aiding them to find the job they are looking for. Most people attending this workshop, I believe, would also benefit from one that is centered around WHY the use of the internet is so essential to their job hunting and how important it is to network with perspective employers or people within their career fields.

Overall, I found this workshop to be interesting, informative and had a lot of information to offer when it came to the basic understanding of social media tools over the internet and their purposes; yet it would be delightful to be able to attend a workshop that peels more of those social media layers for a further understanding of how to use social media to one’s job seeking advantages.

Feliz 28 de Julio Peru!!

30 Jul

Peru, my birth country, just celebrated their 189th Anniversary on July 28th, 2010. This is obviously a day of celebration since I am proud of my roots and origins; yet what makes me particularly proud is that Peru has come such a long way in its development and has made itself very well recognized on an international level, not just as another country in South America, but as a country which has truly made a mark in international development.

Earlier this year, Hilary Clinton visited my home country to meet with the current president of Peru, Alan García Pérez, and was delighted with the country, the people and what it had to offer and all that she experienced on her visit. She went to Peru to discuss different affairs between the United Estates and Peru since they have worked together for many years, but recently there has been a movement to make that partnership closer than ever before.

Hilary wrote a piece for the Latin American Herald Tribune ( ) to congratulate Peru on their 189th anniversary and take the time to acknowledge and present her thoughts on the country. As mentioned before, the United Estates and Peru have had a close partnership for various reasons, and as Hilary Clinton mentioned in her article “Our relationship is rooted in our shared respect for democratic governance, our commitment to free trade and open markets, and our vigorous defense of individual rights and civil liberties.” Following this quote she recognized Peru for their movements which as sure to keep the country on the track of economic growth and stability for many years to come.

This article and recognition by Hilary Clinton make me even more proud to be a Peruvian young woman. Even though I don’t still live in Peru, I try to maintain updated with its current affairs and particularly it’s movements on a world stage. I would like my country to be recognized on a higher level than another developing country in South America, but as a country that has truly made a mark and impacted positive changes and developments on an international level.

Peru is a very unique country which is very rich in natural resources, is made up of three regions (the Coast, the Andes and the Amazonic Jungle) which is a rare diversity all in one country and is home of one of the 7 wonders of the world, Machu Picchu. It’s a country with so much to offer on so many level, particularly with its tourism since you really don’t ever get enough time to try it all; and trust me I’ve tried it on my month long trips. For this and so many reason I highly recommend people to visit and experience a unique vacation full of adventure, fun and memories that will truly last a lifetime. Once again Feliz 28 de Julio Peru! or Happy 28th of July Peru!

Poem By Audrey Hepburn

23 Jul

This poem was written by Audrey Hepburn herself and read at her funeral. I find it to be truly inspiring and it sincerely displays the type of woman Audrey Hepburn (one of my idols) truly was. She was strong, confident, feminine and empowering; and hopefully for many years to come women can learn from her and embrace Audrey’s traits in their own lifestyles.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness..
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.

People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

Now that you have read this beautiful poem, what are your thoughts??

Kelly Cutrone vs. She Does The City

21 Jul

As many of us know, Kelly Cutrone, the author of “If You Have To Cry Go Outside”and owner of PR Firm “People’s Revolution”, is to make a stop in Toronto as part of her book signing tour. Kelly was scheduled to arrive in Toronto on March the 14th and attend interviews with different media outlets, some of the appearances include MTV and a book signing at the Eaton Centre.

Kelly was set and scheduled to do an interview for the blog, “She Does The City”; both which I follow and maintain updated with via Twitter. The situation turned ugly when “She Does The City”tweeted about the potential interview with Cutrone stating, “Interviewing Kelly Cutrone on Monday. Got any questions for the wicked witch of PR?”. Kelly quickly responded upon discovering this insulting tweet, since she constantly checks any updates related to People’s Revolution and Cutrone herself. Kelly replied to the tweet “@shedoesthecity ask her why she cancels interviews with people who call her a wicked witch – write your own piece – i am not giving you 10-15 minutes of my fucking precious time”.

Since then, “She Does The City” has released an apology on their website( since it is evident that everyone who is anyone, or no one for that fact, in this business NEEDS to be in Kelly’s “good books”. As mentioned before, I follow both on Twitter, and prior to this clash I saw the tweet and thought to myself, “I really don’t think Kelly will like this, It’s disrespectful” and a couple of hours later, I heard the news of the cancelled interview.

I believe that regardless of who your are and what your position is, business is business, and it is essential to maintain a certain level of professionalism regardless of what field you are in. As much as I love the blog page and follow it, in this case for “She Does The City” it was an open mouth-insert foot situation and from this we are learning the lesson to watch what we say and never ever get too “fresh”, particularly with Miss Cutrone.

* For those who are interested, here is a Twitpic and proof of the exchange in words between the two parties.

***This article was originally written by me on March 15th, 2010 at the height of the issue. I chose to publish it now since it is a reflection of a mistake many do make and this situation teaches us a brilliant lesson for us to take with us in our professional careers.
