Markaz VIP Patio Launch

On May 5th, 2011 I was invited to the exclusive VIP patio launch at Markaz Middle Eastern and Pakistani Grill & Shisha Lounge. As soon as we walked in, I went with Theresa Kim of YYZ Living Magazine, we were guided to the VIP patio reserved especially for their exclusive guests. The ambiance was brilliant! There was arabic music playing in the background at just the right volume, loud enough to enjoy but low enough to mingle with other guests without the need to scream into each other’s ears. The white couches with the red fabric accents really set the middle eastern mood, and even though the lounge is located downtown Toronto you really get absorbed into the middle eastern atmosphere that brings out a sense of peacefulness.

Markaz quickly climbed to the top of my favourite hang out spots for the summer, so if you are ever interested in coming for a visit you may just run into me there! Markaz is located on 222 Richmond Street West and has a parking lot right across there street for the incredible convenience of those driving, and it is just down the street from the club district downtown for those who prefer public transit. Markaz has a full dining room as well as comfy couches for those just wanting to enjoy shisha and drinks; also an upstairs patio for the general public and a small cover charge allows for reservations and an exclusive spot in their VIP patio (that is where you will find me on nice days).

A Passion For Fashion Awards by YES & TFI

Last summer, I wrote a post on fashion business based workshops brought to you by Youth Employment Services (YES) and Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI), “A Passion for Fashion”. After the completion of all 6 workshops there was a chance to enter the “Fashionista’s Den” competition where the winner was to obtain a chance at an exclusive one year membership with TFI, $1000 to get your business started and 50 hours of business advisory and fashion mentorship.

On April 27th, 2011 The Passion For Fashion Awards were held at the Drake Hotel and hosted by the organizer and coordinator of the workshops, Gail McInnes. The top 10 finalists were present along with their business plans which were required to be completed in order to enter the Fashionista’s Den. We were able to look through the extensive business plans and it was evident that the finalists and contestants worked very hard and put a lot of time and effort to get to their top 10 spots.

All of the finalists were introduced one by one by Gail McInnes along with a slide of their presentations so the audience got an idea of what their fashion business plans were and what they were trying to establish throughout their journey at A Passion For Fashion. Finally, Bonnie Yam (as pictured above with Gail) was announced as the winner of the Fashionista’s Den, who has a jewellery line by the name of “Roxx”. I remember sitting next to Bonnie during the workshops and she was always a sweet and attentive girl consistent at willing to learn, never did I think her jewellery line would be beyond gorgeous! When I saw the look book and her business plan I was blown away at the caliber of detail, uniqueness and elegance of her pieces.

William & Kate: Royal Wedding Highlights

Royal wedding highlights from the dress, to the bouquet, to the jewels and veil directly from me, who pulled an all-nighter to catch the best of the royal wedding live and direct from London. Kate Middleton looked so calm and serene as her car drove up to the Westminster Abbey and as she walked down the aisle to meet her awaiting Prince. One of the best caught moments was Harry cracking jokes at the Prince as Kate walked up to him. The Prince’s response to his oh so long awaiting bride? “You’re beautiful”; all a girl wants to hear on her wedding day from her Prince.

The details of the dress were by far one of the best kept secrets in society since…forever? There were rumours as of last night that Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen was the dress designer since she was seen sneaking into Kate’s hotel; and indeed it was Sarah Burton herself who not only designed Kate’s dress but her sister Pippa’s as well.

I was a huge fan of the lace on Kate’s dress which really brought out a classy  and feminine side to the dress, as well as added character. It was evident that Kate was quite involved in the design since it is very much reflective of her simple and modern side, all while not forgetting the traditional aspects. Her shoes were also designed by the McQueen House.

Kate’s Cartier tiara was given to the queen on her 18th birthday and worn by her of course on many occasions; and it came to no surprise that everyone was in shock and could not get over the gorgeous Cartier tiara once its history and details were confirmed.

Kate’s bouquet was made up of a mixture of gorgeous flowers that represented happiness, love, friendship and marriage. The bouquet was significant of many aspects that she wants as part of her marriage.

The Famous Balcony Kiss

The second most anticipated event of the royal wedding, after the revelation of the dress of course, was the balcony kiss by the couple following their wedding ceremony. They had practiced and practiced to make sure they go this kiss just right!; since it is going to me on most, if not all, media outlets around the world for many years to come. William and Kate, who were named the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, had to ensure they had an excellent camera angle as they kissed since without a doubt their famous balcony kiss will be displayed on stamps, memorabilia and so on; not only in magazines, news papers and television.

The wedding was magical and reflective of the fairy tale that most of us girls dream of. It was particularly an exciting experience to watch the wedding live since it is an occassion not everyone gets to experience. I truly wish Kate and Will the best for the future and believe they will do a fantastic job at taking over the roles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. In a few more years you will get to watch my wedding with Prince Harry..a girl can dream right??

Butter Public Relations: Internship Opportunity (Part-time)

15-20 Hours per week for 3 months
Ideally between the hours of 10 and 2 – 3 days a week: Mon/Weds/Fri preferred.
Open to current marketing, communications or public relations students or recent graduates only
High standard of quality and work ethic is a must
Appreciation of many different types of music and able to deal with repetitive pop and indie rock tracks.
Strong writing, research and fact-checking skills
Overall wicked / positive / problem solving / perceptive attitude.
Exceptional knowledge of food, the Canadian food market, chefs, restaurants, media, food events and key players

FAT is fast approaching and they are currently looking for artists and designers to showcase at the events and shows that will be held during the week. FAT is an excellent way to put your name or brand out there, and will provide you with an opportunity unlike any other. Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week |FAT| is looking for contemporary fashion designers and visual artists to showcase their work in the upcoming festival in April 2011.

Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week is a platform for inventive, pioneering and contemporary expression. This annual multi-arts event features 200 national and international fashion designers, visual artists, bands and performers each year. The festival delivers a packed schedule of runway shows, live performances, music, photography exhibits, video screenings and installation exhibits, to celebrate leaders in a wide range of art forms. Held every April, the festival welcomes 5,000 people including stylists, buyers, curators, critics, members of the media, the arts, music and fashion related industries as well as the general public.


The |FAT| 2011 theme “Fashion Schematics” explores the messages, systems, schemes, symbols and concepts inherent in the notion of fashion, through photography, video, fashion design, performance, installation and music. The festival will look at the ways we create visual dialogues and make sense of the world through fashion and creative expression. “Fashion Schematics” will examine how we build the systems in which we function, the strategies we use in creating our identities and the messages we convey through codes, currencies and narratives.

Cassels & Brock Fashion Business Session

Cassels and Brock will be holding a FREE fashion business session titled “From Concept to Runway” which will feature Robin Kay, the president of the Fashion Design Council of Canada. The event will be held on Tuesday, November 23rd at 5pm at the Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP location (40 King St W, 21st Floor).

Robin Kay will be discussing the importance of the participation of retailers and designers within high profile events, such as fashion week, for the purpose of increasing commercial success through brand recognition and awareness.

Attendees must register for this exclusive event and must be older than 19 years of age in order to attend the event. The schedule for the evening is as follows:

I Wore Purple…Did You?

Yesterday, Oct 20th, there was a movement organized to wear the colour purple to raise awareness and commemorate the GLBT youth that have committed suicide due to bullying and homophobia. This movement spoke very loudly since by simply wearing the colour purple GLBT youth recognized the support that they have by the people within their communities.

The issue of homophobia against GLBT youth has been going on for years, but recently it has really hit our communities since there has been a wave of suicides by gay youth for the bullying and unacceptable that they have to endure within their every day lives.

People Magazine Cover - Oct 2010

People Magazine release an issue with a front cover that remembered the youth and made the situation aware to their readers and other people that simply walk by the magazine stands. I applaud the efforts of People Magazine to bring this issue to the surface and make people see that something has to be done, particularly by putting a face or identity to the stories we heard in the news.

There are many celebrities joining this movement, particularly through the It Gets Better campaign  which consists of many Youtube videos posting hopeful video messages for the youth reminding them that “It Gets Better”. Below are some of the celebrities that have joined the movement:

A video that particularly stood out to us is of Tim Gunn, from Project Runway, who for the first time admitted his experience as a gay youth and his suicide attempt and how glad he is that it was unsuccessful. Watch below:

GLBT youth are not alone, there are many people out there that have gone through what they are going through today and have gone on to lead extremely successful lives. It’s about educating people around us and ensuring thy know that it is ok to have different likes outside of the norms of society, and it is most of all ok to express yourself the best way you see fit. So together, along with organizations and projects like the “Make It Better” project and the “It Gets Better” campaign we will try our best to educate people and prevent teens with such high potentials from taking their own lives as a result of unfortunate circumstances.

Philip Sparks’ Toronto Showroom

While at the presentation of the new line for Spring 2011 by Toronto based designer Philip Sparks, I was fortunate enough to visit Philip’s showroom and studio in Toronto.

Walking through Philip’s showroom was a whole experience on its own unlike any other I have experienced before.  Particularly since it was clear that the designer pays great attention to detail and really appreciates the true craftmanship that goes into designing a successful line.

I could not help but snap a couple of pictures while I was there since I was truly captured by the space in which Philip Sparks works in. The space took me back to the idea of older design houses which were not about mass fabrication, but about the detail and time it takes to make each piece. Throughout my visit, it was evident that Philip takes pride and time into the craft of designing the brilliant pieces which he offers to his buyers and consumers. Below is an image of Philip Sparks’ studio and the space in which he works in:

It was a brilliant opportunity to not only see the launch of his new Spring 2011 line while I was there, but to also see where it was all created. In the above image,  you can see the patterns hanging on the rack in the back and all I could think about while I was there was the process it took for those patterns to transform into pieces like the ones below.

I was a fan of  Philip Sparks prior to visiting his studio and seeing his show for the first time, yet experiencing all this has turned be into more than just a fan; it has become a commitment to the brand. I am now committed to the brand since I appreciate when a designer pays attention to such detail and really takes their time with the pieces as an art and a craft; as well as goes beyond contributing to the fashion world by simply just adding a couple of pieces of clothing to a season. Philip makes a statement that the true art and craft of fashion is here to stay well beyond the 21st century.
